Small Koi Rounded Vase by Adrian brough

Adrian Brough was born in Brixham, Devon, in 1962 and is the son of Leach Potter Alan Brough. He moved to Cornwall at the age of seven when his father started at the Leach Pottery and was educated in both St Ives and the nearby Lelant, where he now lives. His Chinese, Korean and Portuguese influenced designs are strongly flavoured by his Cornish environment and have gained a vast number of collectors both home and abroad.

Brough’s high fired earthenware is highly inspired by his environment and greatly reflects his Cornish surroundings. Cornwall is surrounded by sea to the North, West and South which evidently imitates the loose wash of sand and sea like the shades of colours beautifully incorporated into Brough’s pottery designs. Other influences which are apparent in Brough’s works, are amongst Korean, Portuguese and Chinese design. Koi-carp play a significant part in Brough’s designs. Many of the attributes of the koi symbolize several lessons and even trials individuals often encounter in life. The koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream, the koi-carp represent many characteristics such as prosperity, harmony and longevity. Which is an absolute reflection of Brough’s peaceful and harmonious potter
