Bolton Abbey in the Olden Times by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, R.A. (1802–1873 London)

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (1802-1973) was famous for his animal paintings and sculptures. He taught Queen Victoria and Prince Albert etching and was a favorite of the artistocracy and of the Royal Academy. Much of his income, however, came from sale of his engravings to the middle class. He was the son of an engraver and many of this paintings were distributed widely as engravings by his brother Thomas.

A historical scene set at the priory gatehouse of Bolton Abbey, West Riding, Yorkshire in the middle ages. An Augustinian abbot and monk receive tribute of game. A forrester with two dogs kneels beside a dead stag, swan, duck, grouse and partridge. A falconer’s assistant carries a dead heron and bittern. A fisherman’s daughter brings trout. Based on a painting completed by 1834 now at Chatsworth House, Devonshire.
